A rewarding hike through one of the main tributaries into the headwaters of the Escalante River.  With its many unrivaled side canyons, natural bridges, arches, waterfalls, sandstone grottos, and overhanging walls surrounded by lush green campsites it is no surprise that the Fremont Indians did a lot of farming in this area.  There is no other canyon that can be compared to this treasure.

Edward Abbey wrote this after walking Coyote Gulch.  "I walked under the bridge, feeling the sensuous pleasure of moving through a wall of stone, wading the stream that made the opening, standing in shadow and looking back at the upstream canyon bathed in morning light, the sparkling water, the varnished slickrock walls, the fresh cool green of the cottonwoods, the pink and the violet plumes of the tamarisks."

Itinerary - The final itinerary may change due to weather or any unforeseen circumstance(s).

Day 1:
Depart Flagstaff at 6am for a scenic drive to the trailhead.  The drive across the Navajo Reservation, around Lake Powell and along the cockscomb is a memorable one. Once at this very remote trailhead we will begin our hike.  Our camp that night will be creek side and surrounded by some inconceivable, towering, sandstone walls. (L) (D)

Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast we continue down into the depths of this great canyon toward the Escalante River.  Each bend of the canyon will bring more and more rewarding views.  We will also explore some ancient Indian artifacts.  (B) (L) (D)

Day 3:
Another day of exploring and this one is action packed! An arch, natural bridge, pictographs, waterfalls and some great side canyons waiting to be explored are just some of the possibilities.  Oh, did we mention another great camp for gazing at stars?   (B) (L) (D)

Day 4:
After a great sunrise over slickrock country we will begin our ascent to the rim with the most interesting part of the trail still to come. (You will just have to come on the trip to see what it is).  Once on the rim you will enjoy some of the best views of the Escalante River confluence, Henry Mountains, and all the canyons of Escalante. (B) (L)

5 and 6-day itineraries offer great opportunities to explore ruins, slickrock routes, the Escalante River, and/or Steven Canyon/Arch.
