This exciting hike offers so many options depending on time and skill level.  It was named due to the similarities of the desert in North Africa.  Hiking through sand, slickrock, the Escalante River and traversing several deep, narrow canyons makes this one of the most diverse hikes in the area.

Egypt to Twenty-five Mile Wash will take you into the Escalante River gorge via an old historic horse trail used by the Cowboys in the late 1800’s.  Once in the riverbed there will many side canyons to explore including the one containing the “Golden Cathedral.”  Rappelling into this unbelievable grotto is an option; however hiking in is the more popular choice.  After exploring some complex ruins we will exit out Twenty-five mile wash by way of an old stock trail.

Egypt to Harris Wash is a premier hike that is not recommended for the weak.  This route has a lot of ups and downs, but one’s hard work will be paid off with a colorful canyon that offers access to the Escalante River, superior slickrock, astonishing views and solitude.  Please contact one of our trip specialists to see if you qualify.  (Not described in itinerary)

Itinerary - The final itinerary may change due to weather or any unforeseen circumstance(s).

Day 1:
Depart Flagstaff at 6am for a scenic drive to the trailhead.  The drive across the Navajo Reservation, around Lake Powell and along the cockscomb is a memorable one. Once at this very remote trailhead we will begin our hike.  Our camp that night will be along the Escalante River, in what used to be an old cowboy camp. (L) (D)

Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast we continue down the depths of this great canyon towards Neon Canyon, but not before having lunch at one of the largest panels of rock art in the Southwest.  Each bend of the canyon will bring more and more rewarding views.  We will also explore some overland routes that offer incredible views of Navajo Mountain, Chop Rock and Straight Cliffs.  (B) (L) (D)

Day 3:
Today is action packed! An arch, slot canyon, ruins, towering sandstone walls, and some great side canyons are just some of the possibilities.  Did we mention another great camp in an alcove, along the river and a clearing for stargazing?  (B) (L) (D)

Day 4:
After a great sunrise over slickrock country we will begin our exit out of this maze of canyons.  Once on the rim you will enjoy some of the best views of the Escalante River confluence, Twenty-five Mile Wash, Henry Mountains, and all the canyons of Escalante. (B) (L)
5 and 6-day itineraries offer great opportunities to explore ruins, slickrock routes, Fence Canyon, Escalante River, and Scorpion Gulch.
