This small desert river and its dozens of side canyons contain some of the wildest, most scenic desert wilderness in the United States. The canyons of Escalante are famous for their serpentine slickrock gorges, deep alcoves, undercut cliffs, desert varnish, towering red walls, natural bridges, arches and Ancient Indian Ruins. This hike is a great example of all that and more. We will also explore ancient Fremont ruins that date back to 1250 A.D. Itineraries vary depending upon the stretch of river and the number of days we hike. This hike requires a lot of wet wading and stream crossings

Itinerary - The final itinerary may change due to weather or any unforeseen circumstance(s).

This hike has itineraries that can be catered towards a family on up to the experienced canyoneer.

Day 1:
After a very scenic drive through the Navajo Reservation, Painted Desert and hike to an arch, we will begin to explore this magnificent gorge like John Wesley Powell once did. After getting wet and exploring some ruins we will finish the day camping under the stars. (L) (D)

Day 2: After an early breakfast, we are off for a full day of hiking side canyons and hidden secrets. We will enter the lower Death Hollow and hike up this tranquil canyon to some unknown crystal clear pools. These swimming holes present great opportunities for cooling off from the heat. (B) (L) (D)

Day 3:
Today’s journey will bring us to some interesting cliff dwellings, arches and a natural bridge. We will also have a chance to explore another side canyon - (B) (L) (D)

Day 4:
We begin our final traverse and bid farewell to this outdoor museum, but not until we visit some more swimming holes, ruins, sandstone grottos, alcoves and cowboyglyphs.

5 and 6-Day itineraries allow more time for exploring side canyons, overland routes, seldom seen ruins, and relaxing.  Please allow 10 or more days for the hike to Lake Powell.
