One of the more classic Escalante hikes that offers easy hiking while wading in a spirited creek. The sandy, shaded beaches make falling asleep under the stars easy. The numerous side canyons with Moqui steps leading up to the rim allows one to explore ruins from the Pueblo II and Pueblo III (A.D. 900- to 1200) periods. The loop hike back along the rim will lead you over rolling hills of slickrock and will present enchanting views back down the canyon. A lay over day at the confluence of Harris Wash and the Escalante River offers a chance to explore Choprock and many other hidden treasures. (You may have read about this in Backpacker Magazine)
Itinerary - The final itinerary may change due to weather or any unforeseen circumstance(s).
Day 1:
Depart Flagstaff at 6am for a scenic drive to the trailhead. The drive across the Navajo Reservation, around Lake Powell and along the cockscomb is a memorable one. Once at this very remote trailhead we will begin our hike. Our camp that night will be creek side and surrounded by some inconceivable, towering, sandstone walls. (L) (D)
Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast we continue down into the depths of this great canyon toward the Escalante River. Each bend of the canyon will bring more rewarding views. We will also explore some ancient Indian life using steps carved in the sandstone to reach some of these high dwelling and granaries. (B) (L) (D)
Day 3:
Following a visit to Silver Creek Falls Canyon to see some old inscriptions, we will begin to work our way up river towards the “V.” This is the large sand dune that will bring us back to the rim for some spectacular views. (B) (L) (D)
Day 4:
After a quiet morning of solitude and a great sunrise over slickrock country we will begin our journey back towards civilization. This cross-country route offers a great view of the Egypt Bench, Harris Wash, Choprock, and unusual rock formations. (B) (L)
5 and 6-day itineraries offer great opportunities to explore ruins, slickrock routes, the Escalante River, and/or Choprock. |
