Itinerary

  • Day 1 — Wilson Mountain & Camp Arrival

    • Hiking: 8 miles, 2,300 ft ascent/descent
    • Drive Time: 1.5 hours from Flagstaff
    • Meals: Light Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll depart Flagstaff in the morning for the scenic drive to Sedona and kick off our adventure with a challenging but rewarding climb of Wilson Mountain. Rising 2,300 feet above the high desert, Wilson offers panoramic views that stretch across Sedona’s famous red rock cliffs and canyons. After a picnic lunch at the Sedona Overlook, we descend and make our way to our campsite. Settle in, relax, and enjoy a hearty dinner by the fire as the stars emerge overhead.

  • Day 2 — Mitten Ridge Loop & Red Rock Vistas

    • Hiking: 8.5 miles, 1,100 ft ascent/descent
    • Drive Time: 45 minutes
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today’s loop hike takes us high above Bear Wallow Canyon and Oak Creek Canyon, with spectacular 360-degree views from the slickrock saddle of Mitten Ridge. Along the way, we’ll walk sections of old wagon trails and navigate short stretches of slickrock, learning how to move confidently across this unique desert terrain. After descending via the Cow Pies Trail—named for the rounded sandstone domes along the route—we’ll return to camp for another evening of relaxation, campfire stories, and a freshly prepared dinner.

  • Day 3 — Mescal Mountain & Creekside Relaxation

    • Hiking: 4.5 miles, 400 ft ascent/descent
    • Drive Time: ~40 minutes
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Our morning hike takes us on a loop around Mescal Mountain, where red cliffs meet soaring white sandstone walls and the vistas stretch for miles. After a picnic lunch on the trail, we’ll return to camp for an afternoon of creekside relaxation at camp. Enjoy time to wade in Oak Creek, rest under the sycamore trees, or simply kick back at camp before dinner. This slower-paced afternoon is a welcome chance to recharge before our grand finale hike on Day 4.

  • Day 4 — Cathedral Rock & Oak Creek

    • Hiking: 7 miles, up to 600 ft ascent/descent
    • Drive Time: 1.5 hours back to Flagstaff
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

On our final day, we’ll head to one of Sedona’s most iconic landmarks: Cathedral Rock. The trail winds through juniper and pinyon forests, then ascends sandstone benches along the eastern flank of Cathedral. Continuing north, we’ll dip down to the banks of Oak Creek, where we’ll enjoy a final picnic lunch beneath the cottonwoods. After soaking in the views one last time, we’ll return to the trailhead and drive back to Flagstaff, wrapping up an unforgettable four days of Sedona hiking and camping.

  • Do I need hiking experience for the Sedona Hiking & Camping Tour?

This trip is rated intermediate. You should be comfortable hiking 5–8 miles a day with moderate elevation gain and loss. Trails are well-maintained, but some include slickrock sections and short climbs. If you hike regularly at home—or enjoy activities like running, cycling, or long walks—you’ll be well-prepared.

  • How difficult are the hikes in Sedona?

Expect daily hikes of 4 to 8.5 miles with 400 to 2,300 feet of elevation change. Our guides set a pace that works for the group, and we take plenty of breaks to enjoy the scenery. Sedona’s famous red rock trails can feel challenging, but the views are always worth the effort.

  • What camping gear is included?

We provide all major gear so you don’t have to worry about packing it:

    • Tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads
    • Trekking poles and daypacks (if needed)
    • Cooking equipment, eating supplies, and all meals/snacks

All you need to bring are personal clothing, hiking shoes, a rain jacket, toiletries, and refillable water bottles or a hydration bladder.

  • Where will we camp?

We camp at Lo Lo Mai Creekside Campground, a peaceful setting shaded by sycamore trees along Oak Creek, just outside Sedona. The campground features restrooms, showers, and access to the creek. Evenings at camp include delicious dinners, time to relax by the fire, and stargazing under Arizona’s clear desert skies.

  • What are the meals like?

Your guide will prepare hearty, fresh meals each day. Expect hot breakfasts, picnic-style lunches on the trail, and satisfying dinners back at camp. We also provide a variety of trail snacks to keep your energy up while hiking. With advance notice, we can accommodate most dietary needs (vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.).

  • How many people are in the group?

Group sizes are limited to up to 6 guests, as is mandated by maximum allowable group sizes on guided hikes within the Red Rock Ranger District. This ensures personal attention, customized pacing, and a more intimate experience.

  • What’s the best time of year for Sedona hiking?

The best seasons for Sedona hiking are spring (mid-April to mid-May) and fall (late September through October) when temperatures are mild and conditions are ideal. These limited departures also avoid the summer heat and winter chill.

  • How do I get to the starting point?

Trips begin and end in Flagstaff, Arizona. You’ll need to arrange your own travel to Flagstaff and lodging the night before the trip. On Day 1, we’ll pick you up at your hotel in Flagstaff and provide all transportation for the rest of the tour.

  • Can families join this trip?

Yes—active families often find this trip to be a great fit, especially with teens who enjoy hiking and camping. Younger children may be better suited for shorter day hikes or custom family trips. Not sure? Contact us, and we’ll help you decide which option works best.

  • How much should I tip my guide?

Gratuities are not included. A tip of around 15% of the trip cost is customary and greatly appreciated for guides who work hard to make your experience safe, fun, and memorable.
