Phantom Ranch Hiking Tour

Four Season Guides

Trip Description

Our Phantom Ranch Hiking Tour is one of the most iconic ways to experience the heart of the Grand Canyon—and an ideal introduction for travelers who want to hike below the rim without camping. Designed for active hikers who value comfort, expert guidance, and thoughtful pacing, this trip delivers a classic Grand Canyon experience with nights spent at historic Phantom Ranch.

We begin our journey on the legendary South Kaibab Trail, the most direct route to the Colorado River and the canyon floor. This dramatic descent offers nonstop views as the landscape opens up around you—sweeping panoramas of Pipe Creek Canyon, Cremation Canyon, the Inner Gorge, and distant views toward the North Rim. It’s a visually stunning introduction to the immense scale and geology of the canyon.

Phantom Ranch becomes our home for the next two nights. Nestled along Bright Angel Creek beneath shady cottonwood trees, this oasis at the bottom of the canyon provides a rare opportunity to slow down and truly experience life below the rim. With a full day to explore, we will choose from a variety of guided hikes from the Ranch, or you can simply relax and take in the quiet beauty of the canyon floor.

Our final day follows the historic Bright Angel Trail back to the South Rim. With reliable water sources, shade, and a steady grade, this classic ascent offers time to reflect on the journey as expansive canyon views unfold with every step upward.

This Phantom Ranch hiking tour offers a rare combination: a true below-the-rim Grand Canyon experience, expert guidance throughout, and comfortable lodging each night. It’s a rewarding, well-balanced adventure for those who want to experience one of the world’s great hikes—without roughing it.

*Due to temporary closures in the inner canyon, this trip will require an altered itinerary through June 30, 2026. The hike will exit the canyon via the South Kaibab Trail.

  • Day 1 : South Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch

Hike from the South Rim to the Colorado River on the South Kaibab Trail, the most direct route to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. This steep descent offers uninterrupted views into Pipe Creek Canyon, Cremation Canyon, the Inner Gorge, and across to the North Rim.

After reaching the Colorado River, cross the Black Bridge and continue to Phantom Ranch, located along Bright Angel Creek. The afternoon includes time to rest before dinner. Optional ranger programs are often available in the evening.

Distance & Elevation: 7 miles, 4800 foot descent

  • Day 2: Inner Canyon Hiking and Exploration

Spend a full day hiking below the rim near Phantom Ranch. Morning hikes typically include the Clear Creek Trail, which climbs above the Colorado River and provides expansive inner canyon views.

In the afternoon, explore The Box, a narrow gorge carved by Bright Angel Creek between towering granite and schist walls. Additional side hikes may be available depending on conditions and group ability. Your guide will determine the day’s route options.

Distance & Elevation: up to 8 miles, variable elevation

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 3: Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim

Ascend from Phantom Ranch to the South Rim via the Bright Angel Trail. The route follows the Colorado River briefly before climbing Pipe Creek, passing through multiple ecological zones on the way to the rim.

This historic corridor trail contrasts with the South Kaibab route, offering changing perspectives, shaded sections, and water availability along the ascent. The hike concludes at the Bright Angel Trailhead in Grand Canyon Village.

Distance & Elevation: 9.5 miles, 4400 foot ascent

    Breakfast, Lunch

*2-Day Itineraries follow Days 1 & 3 of the above described itinerary.

  • Temporary Itinerary Change (through June 30, 2026)

Due to a temporary closure of the River Trail, which provides access to the Bright Angel Trail from Phantom Ranch, all Phantom Ranch trips will need to exit the canyon via the South Kaibab Trail on the last day.

  • Where do meet our guides?

We will hold a pre-trip orientation at 5:00pm the evening prior to your trip’s departure at the Maswik Lodge in Grand Canyon Village. Departure times and logistics for the following morning will be discussed at the orientation. Most trips will depart between 5:30am and 7:30am.
