Winter Hiking In The Grand Canyon

A Four Season Guides trip was recently featured in London’s Financial Times, one of the world’s leading financial publications. The article was published in the Life and Arts section and details a hiking adventure to the bottom of Grand Canyon during the New Year’s Holiday. The weather forecast was a little daunting leading up to the trip, with about 8 to 12 inches of snow predicted on New Year’s Eve at the South Rim. Despite the forecast, our group excitedly descended the South Kaibab Trail on December 30 under sunny skies and mild temperatures. Our destination was Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground, where half of the group would camp and half would enjoy the warm beds at the ranch for 2 nights.
Winter hiking in the Grand Canyon can bring all kinds of weather from sunshine and highs in the 60s at the bottom to bitter cold, biting winds, and blowing snow throughout the canyon. We were afforded a a good dose of sunshine, a healthy snowfall, and an epic post-storm light show from the Sotuh Rim when we exited on Day 3. Perhaps the most amazing part of the trip was the 12 hours of snowfall on New Year’s Eve at Phantom Ranch which left several inches of powder on the ground, an event that might happen once a decade, at best.

Which trails are best for winter hiking in the Grand Canyon?

What should I pack for a winter hike in the Grand Canyon?
Pack layers for warmth, waterproof outerwear, traction devices for icy trails, and plenty of food and water. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also important due to intense sunlight reflecting off snow. If camping, use a four-season tent and a sleeping bag rated for sub-freezing temperatures.
